As of tomorrow, Summer is officially over and we’ll be entering a new season.
September has been a wild month.
I attended my first Burning Man, it was everything I hoped for and more. If you’ve ever considered going then stop thinking about it and start planning.
From there I flew to Florida to see family and spend time with my 90-year-old grandma.
I then flew back to the West Coast to meet up with a bunch of internet friends at an in-person mastermind just outside of San Diego.
On my way back to Barcelona, I had a long layover in New Jersey and got to enjoy a slice of pizza with my dear friend Xavi.
And now that I’m back home, I’m looking forward to slowing down…
I haven’t posted an article in over a month, mostly because of travel and all the things I listed above, but also because I haven’t made it a priority.
In other words, I haven’t been playing full out.
With Fall approaching, I’m making it a point to publish more frequently.
I’m going to do this by setting constraints.
Otherwise, I’ll continue to fall victim to Parkinson’s Law.
The thing about creating for yourself is that you don’t have a boss telling you what to do and when to do it by. With no time constraints, I end up obsessively fine-tuning and editing my writing.
Constraints help us shift our focus from process to results. Instead of getting bogged down in endless preparation and overthinking, they can push us to take action and meet deadlines.
Another roadblock has been perfectionism. Writing in public is still somewhat new to me and I hesitate putting things out into the world until they are just right.
I have dozens of half-finished articles that have yet to see the light of day. This has been a pattern in my life that I’d like to overcome. I tend to start things and then not finish them.
Eventually we must come to terms with the fact that nothing is ever perfect. The only way to improve is to put in the reps and practice your craft. Imperfect action beats perfect inaction every time.
So my mantra for this season is: “Clarity comes in the doing”
Moving forward, I’m setting the constraint of publishing at least one article a week.
I’m going to stop playing small and start playing full out.
Are there any areas in your life where you might be playing small?
Instead of overthinking, set constraints, start taking action, and you’ll figure things out along the way.
Until next time my friends.
