There are a number of factors that influence our identities:
Where we live
The people we spend time with
Your parents and extended family
Your habits and routines
These factors and many more shape who you are as a person.
But as you get older, you should try to expose yourself to new ways of thinking or being. When we get too comfortable, life becomes boring and mundane.
So don’t sit back and let external factors that you had no control over decide who you are going to become. We are a constantly evolving species and our souls crave variety. Learn to embrace change and actively seek it out for yourself.
Think of life like a book, split up into different chapters. No one wants to read a book with just one long chapter. They want unexpected surprises, not predictable outcomes.
My move to Barcelona marked the beginning of a new chapter. It brought about so many positive changes and experiences that I’m forever grateful for. I didn’t have any plan whatsoever, but I knew I wanted something different. I was craving an adventure and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
It changed the entire course of my life and I often wonder what I would be doing right now had I not been open to this change.
I think everyone should change what they do or how they live every 5-10 years.
Now that’s a range; if things are going terribly, make a change in a year or two. If things are going great, you can drag it out for 15 years. But make a change.
Luckily we no longer live in a world where you stay in the same profession or geographical location for your entire life, only to retire 40 years later without having experienced any diversity.
Remember, we humans crave variety, so don’t get too comfortable and settle for a life of mediocrity. Seeking out change is a catalyst for your growth and personal development.
By switching your career path or moving to a different place, you'll learn new skills, meet new people, and gain a broader perspective on life.
Worst case scenario, you can always backtrack and return to what you were doing before. But at least now you have a different lens which you see things through.
And to be clear, it doesn’t have to be something as drastic as quitting your job and moving to a new country. You can start by changing little things and gradually build up to bigger changes over time.
Try changing up your diet or your workout routine. Try learning a new skill or picking up a new hobby you’ve been curious about. Try changing the time at which you wake up. Try changing your morning routine to incorporate some sort of mindfulness practice like meditation or breathwork. Little changes like these can lead to massive outcomes.
Here’s a tip - If there’s something you’ve been wanting to change or do, try bringing it up in conversations with everyone you speak to.
When you begin to spread the word, you’ll find that doors start to “magically” open for you. This is a simple way to help facilitate the change you might be looking for.
In the end, change is the only constant in life. And sometimes change is thrust upon us without warning. But those who are able to adapt to change quickly are better equipped to handle life's challenges and emerge stronger from difficult situations, so might as well welcome the changes that come your way and embrace them full-heartedly.
Until next time my friends.
